12 Mar 2019

Key industry leader to share his experience and facilitate audience participation at Fish Waste for Profit, 10-11 April.

Taking place in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Fish Waste for Profit Conference will welcome Dr Thor Sigfusson, Founder & Chairman of the Iceland Ocean Cluster, will return as chair for 2019.

Sigfusson is an Icelandic entrepreneur, author, speaker and founder / chairman of the Iceland Ocean Cluster (IOC), a platform connecting entrepreneurs and businesses within the marine industry. Since establishing the Iceland Ocean Cluster, Sigfusson has spent his time educating audiences in the US, Asia and Europe about the opportunities presented through fish reutilisation and how by-products can be turned into profit. Offering years of experience and using the research and information generated from Iceland Ocean Cluster as case studies, Dr Thor Sigfusson can offer delegates a wealth of understanding and insight. In 2013, he founded the company ‘Collagen’ which aims to use fish skin to create marine collagen. Following this, he co-founded Hlemmur Food Hall, Sjó-Food Hall and Reykjavik Foods in 2016.

Commenting on the industry. Sigfusson made reference to the fact that "the global seafood industry dumps nearly 10 million tons of perfectly good fish back into the ocean or uses it as landfill. At the same time nearly 90 percent of the world’s fish stocks are threatened by overfishing. The IceFish Conference is a way for all of us to address this problem through product reutilisation by bringing together people with hands on experience.”

Dr Thor Sigfusson will be making his chairman’s address in the morning of the 10 April, followed by keynote addresses from Hordur G. Kristinsson, Chief Science and Innovation Officer at Matis and Neil Auchterlonie, Technical Director at IFFO. Other key speakers include: Maria Hayes, Scientific Research Officer at Teagasc Food Research Centre, who will be discussing 'Fish by-product recovery and utilisation: Examples from Ireland’, and Stella Rögn Sigurdordottir, Managing Director at Lipid Pharmaceuticals, who will deliver ‘Free Fatty Acids from Marine Oils - an Untapped Asset’.

The conference will conclude with a technical visit to Haustak, a Codland company and the largest fish drying company in Iceland. Codland believe it is their responsibility “to make the most out of every kilo of catch” through implementing biotechnical solutions to create new, valuable products from underutilised raw material produced by the fishing industry.
